A native of Portland, Austin Trafficante aka HalfDeaf is an electronic music producer, instrumentalist, and DJ with a deep passion for sound in all of its forms. Starting on the piano at age four, it quickly became clear that music was more to him than simply playing from a manuscript at recitals. Growing up under the guidance of two audiophiles ensured he had a healthy diet of the best music from the Baby Boomers while studying Classical, Blues and Jazz piano. He had his first exposure to Bass music while sneaking into Dancehall nights when visiting his brother in New Orleans as a teen, and to say that it made a lasting impression on him would be an understatement.
An appreciation of the diversity of music defines HalfDeaf’s style with an emphasis on the contrast between the raw feel of acoustic elements and the precision of digital bass. Taking influence from artists such as, A Tribe Called Quest, Augustus Pablo, Trentemoller, and Biome, he focuses on blending genres rather than defining them. HalfDeaf’s relentless quest to attain the highest quality in his work has resulted in an ongoing study of sound design, mixing, and mastering. His efforts to produce high quality music have resulted in recent features on Earmilk’s popular segment, Wobble Wednesdays.
When not producing music, HalfDeaf strives to bring other creatives together, hosting the longrunning Portland Producers’ Meet-up with MyMind at their studio in SE Portland, and routinely working with visual artists on a variety of projects. It looks to be an exciting year for this Portland native with upcoming releases alongside fellow producer MyMind, as well as shows in Portland and along the West Coast.
